Landscapers in Melbourne

Landscapers price paving, walls and planting from their own assumptions. Asking each one the same questions shows where those assumptions differ.

Questions to ask each business, with a column for each of three quotes
Ask each businessQuote AQuote BQuote C
BusinessIts name, and who you spoke to.
01Which parts of the plan does your quote cover?Paving, decking, walls and planting. Tick off what each business includes.
02Which paver, stone or timber are you quoting?Ask for the product name and colour, so you can see a sample.
03How will water drain away from paved areas?Ask where it will go and whether drainage is priced in.
04What goes under the paving, and how deep? This is hard to see once the job is finished, so ask now.
05Can a machine reach the back of the property? If not, ask how much is done by hand and what that adds.
06Will the work be done by your own crew?Or by other trades, and who manages them.
07When can you start, and how many weeks will it take?Ask what a run of wet weather does to that timeline.
08Who cleans up and takes away the soil and waste?Digging produces a lot of spoil; ask whether its removal is priced.
09Is there a warranty on the workmanship?Ask how long it runs, and write it down.
Ask each business the same questions and write the answers side by side. Printed, the sheet fills one page, with a column for each of three quotes. From landscapermelbourne.com.au, a concept page.

Reading the quotes side by side

Two totals for the same garden can differ because one landscaper has allowed for a deeper base under the paving, or for drainage the other left out. Those are the rows to compare first.

Ask each one to break the quote into parts, such as paving, walls and planting, so like can be set against like.

Before work begins

Tell the landscaper about any pipes, cables or tanks you know are buried in the yard before digging starts.

Agree where materials will be stored and where the skip will sit, so the driveway and lawn are not blocked longer than needed.
